Profiles are the key to success
- Earlier in the chapter, I talked about this free ColorSync utility on the Mac and how it lets you display different profiles. We're not actually using this app to do color management, it's just for demo, so if you're on Windows and you don't have this app, don't worry about it. For now, I just want to explain what profiles are, why they are so important, and how you can get them. A profile, or sometimes it's called an ICC profile, is something that describes the gamut of colors that a device can display, or print, or describe. Actually, a profile doesn't have to describe a particular device. It could also describe what's called a color space, like, this sRGB color space over here in this list. It's not describing one specific screen that somebody has, it's more like an aggregate, an average of screens. Now, Adobe RGB up here describes a different RGB gamut, that is, the shape of the gamut, how reds the reds can be, how blues the blues can be and so on, they're different. Now in this…
