Editing the NCX

[Narrator] There are two navigation documents in any eBook: the NCX and the toc.xhtml or the nav. In this video, we're going to talk about the NCX. The NCX, which is short for Navigation Control file for XML, is an EPUB 2 holdover. It is an extremely fussy piece with a really specific mechanics. Let's look at the example of a long, slightly complex book that has sample chapters from a broad variety of kinds of trades books under a couple of categories. The navigation document is what EPUB 2 readers will pull the table of contents from. Some things to note about this file: in the header, right at the very top, this line, you will see that there's a urn:uuid number. If there are embedded fonts in the eBooks, and they were subsetted by InDesign, this number is important, and I would caution you to stay away from editing it.
