Definition
- [Voiceover] I'd like to begin this chapter on leading with a definition of leading. Leading is the space between lines of type, so-called because it used to be achieved by adding thin strips of lead between the lines of type. On the left, we see a passage that has no extra lead added. I.e., the size of the leading is the same as the size of the type. The same passage on the right has seven points of lead added, indicated by the colored strips, each of which is seven points in height. Leading is measured from the baseline of one line of type to the baseline of the next line, and if I select this vertical line, we see that its height is 70 points. If ever you find yourself needing to measure the leading value of an already-printed piece of type, then you can use a leading gauge, or leading ruler. And these can be purchased from graphic supply stores, and they're a useful thing to have in your studio. On the next page, we have the same passage with three different leading values…
