- Page turning buttons are one of the most common types of interactivity. These are easy to create if you use layers and master pages intelligently in InDesign. Before we begin, I want to demo the finished file in both iBooks and Publish Online and point out a couple of things. Here it is in iBooks. And the next page and previous page buttons function well. But those are sort of redundant in iBooks because iBooks has this hot zone on both the left margin of the page and the right side of the page that does the same thing, that if I click anywhere within that hot zone, it brings me forward a page or back a page.
And I just wanted to point out that hot zone is there. And typically, you wouldn't want to put any buttons within that area because that hot zone will override any button actions that you put within that sort of margin area. However, since these buttons are programmed to do the same thing, go to the next page or the previous page, they function just fine. But let's look at this same project in Publish Online. In Publish Online, if the user has their browser window open real wide, the automatic next page and previous page buttons that Publish Online provides might be way over some distance away from the page itself.
So it's a nice service to provide to your user to have a next page and a previous page button. So let's see how to do this. In the Exercise Files folder, open 01_01_handbook_begin. I'm going to go to my layers panel. Now, whenever possible, I like to create a new layer for buttons. This helps keep things organized and it ensures that my buttons stay on top of all the other objects on the page. So I'm going to make a new layer.
And I'm just going to name that layer Buttons. I'm going to keep that layer as the active layer. Then I'm going to go to the pages panel. Now, I want to create buttons that go to the next page and the previous page on every page throughout this document. Well, the easy way to do this is to put the buttons on the master page. Now, this document has a whole lot of master pages, but notice that they're all based on Master Page B. And then, there's also this Master Page A that's for the front matter. So I'm going to go to Master Page A.
And I'm just going to create a clear frame over the next page artwork down at the bottom right corner. Now, why didn't I just convert that triangle to a button? Well, that triangle's pretty tiny. I almost always create a clear frame for a button like this over my artwork. This enables me to have a large tap zone for the button but have small button artwork. So with that frame selected, I'm going to go to my buttons and forms panel. And there's absolutely no reason to come up here to Type and choose button.
That's just extra work. Instead, just go right down to where it says Actions, and in the little drop-down menu next to the plus, choose Go to Next Page. Declaring an action turns it into a button automatically. So there's no reason to go up and make more work for yourself. So that one's done. So now, I'm just going to take that clear frame that's now a button and Option or Alt drag that over to the previous page artwork. And then come to my buttons and forms panel, remove the Go to Next Page action, and add a Go to Previous Page action.
And then all that remains is to select both of these frames, copy them, go to Master Page B, and choose Edit, Paste in Place. Now that they're on Master Page B, they will trickle down to all the other masters that are based on B. And all the pages that have those masters applied to them will also inherit these buttons. So there you have it. Now you can go to File, Export. Export this as a fixed layout EPUB.
Just accept all the default values here. That's just fine for now. OK out of that. And you're going to get an EPUB export warning at the end that reports that there are some problems with TOC hyperlinks which don't have targets. You can ignore that for now. We're going to talk more about this in another movie. OK out of that and test your EPUB. Your next page and previous page buttons should now work. With the help of master pages and layers, adding page turning buttons to every page of your document is quick and painless.
