The thing that I love about InDesign, is that when I'm designing a project, I can create content on the page and it will print generally as expected. Unfortunately when this content is exported to other mediums, the final results often don't reflect the design of the InDesign page. To help control how objects get exported from InDesign to other medians InDesign CS5.5 has introduced the Articles panel. Let's take a look at how the articles panel works I'm beginning this video with the brochure under score epub file open on my computer. And to help illustrate this concept I'm actually going to start off by exporting this document to an ePub file.
So I'm going to go to the File menu and I'm going to choose Export, and in the format I'm going to make sure that I choose ePub, and I'll go ahead and name my file brochure dot ePub... And I'm going to go ahead and save it in my Project Files folder. So I'll go ahead and click the Save button. And I'm going to go ahead and make sure that the settings are set to view the EPUB after export. So, I'm going to leave the rest of the options at their defaults, and then I'll go ahead and click OK.
And then what's going to happen, I have Adobe Digital Editions installed on my machine, so this file should open inside of Adobe Digital Editions. And when this opens, you can see how the content is stretched out within this file, and it doesn't really seem to be in much of an order, but When you get to this area, you do notice that here's my title and you'll notice here that it says for more information and if we look at the InDesign file, you'll notice that the more information is actually showing up down here.
And this is because when we exported the ePub it's using the document layout at this point, because there's no other method that In Design can use. This is where the articles panel comes into play. I'm going to go to the window menu and I'm goign to choose articles and this is going to open up my articles panel. I'm going to go ahead and dock this to my interface, making it a little bit easier for me to work. The way that the Articles panel works is that I simply drag content from my document into this panel. So for the cover, I'm going to do a Cmd+A on Mac, or Ctrl+A on Windows, to select everything.
And then I'm going to grab one of those selected items, and drop it onto the articles panel. And when you first do it, it looks like we're moving these items off the page, but we're really not. I'm going to give this article a name, I'm going to call it cover and I'll click okay. And we can see now that all of the items that I had selected are now being contained within the cover article. Let's go ahead and scroll down to the next page. And once again, now we can start to see how the elements are positioned on the page.
So, I'm going to start with my title up here. I'm just going to drag this into my articles panel. I'm going to call this article, I'll leave it set to article one, click okay. And now I can actually begin to logically order this content. So, now I'm going to go ahead and select this headline here. I'm going to drag this, drop it right next to the headline. Then I'll grab the body frame. And I'll grab the second body frame. And quite honestly I normally would not build an InDesign document in this manner with so many different components. But this is a great way to illustrate what the Articles panel can do. Then I think what I'll do, is I'm going to grab this image. I think I'll stick this right between these body articles right here, that looks pretty good.
And then, the image and the caption, I'll go ahead and drop this down to the bottom. So again I'll go down to page three and this is kind of its own side bar and this one is essentially a continuation of the article on the previous page. So I'll add that to this article. Now I'm going to create a brand new article for the side bar, give it an appropriate name call it side bar. And I'll put this for more information in there with it as well.
And finally we'll go down to the last page, and I'm essentially just going to grab this table. This is going to be the last article that appears. I'm just going to give this appropriate name. And now what I'm going to do. That I've had this article panel configured we're going to re-export this. And one other thing to show you, if I click on the panel menu, you'll notice that I have a couple options in here. Now let me actually just select one of these articles so we can see this, and we can go into article options to go back in here to give it another new name.
Go in and hit Cancel. Click on the panel menu one time and there's also some other options here to add selected items to the selected article or add document contents of selected article. So it makes it really easy to add content. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to reexport this file, I'll go to the file menu and choose export. And I'll leave the brochure named the same except I'll add an extension, I'll call this _ done and I'll go ahead, and click the save button one more time. This time however instead of letting the ordering based on the page layout I'm going to change the ordering to the same as the articles panel. Once again, I'm going to leave the rest of this set to defaults, view the ePub after exporting, and go ahead and click OK.
Now you'll notice when this opens up in the Adobe Digital Editions application, that the ordering of these items Is a little bit different. Now you can see the headline is appearing in the order that you want it to. Then we have this subheading that was appearing. Then the image, then the article. And you can see that now we have complete control over how this content was exported. And that's what the Articles panel provides to us.
And I'm going to do one more thing to show you. You'll notice that if I go back up to page 1. You'll notice that we have a lot of content on this page. And a bunch of snowflakes, that, when exported to an ePub don't really make a whole lot of sense. I'm going to select this snowflake. And you'll notice that the item that's selected show up in the articles panel with this blue box to the right of that article. So, that's the one that I would actually prefer that it doesn't even appear.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to click on the panel menu and I'm going to chose remove snowflake dot ai. And that's actually going to remove this from the content that's being exported. I'm actually going to do that to the other snowflakes as well, and I can also simply click on. One of these to highlight it, and this also helps me to identify where these items are in my page. If I Double-click on these it highlights the item, so once again I'm going to remove these and one last time I'm going to go to the File menu and choose export. I'll rename the brochure, I'll keep the same name and just overwrite it. And then I'll keep the ordering the same as the article, and we'll see what we get.
And so now notice, as I scroll through here, that those snowflakes are not appearing in my final ePub. As you can see, when creating ePub, XHTML, and PDF files the Articles panel can save you a lot of frustration, by making it much easier to control the order that items get exported in the final product.
