- I got a question the other day from a reader who emailed and said, how, why is it that when she went to Edit Original in InDesign, the JPG that she had selected opened up in Preview instead of Photoshop, and how could she change that in InDesign. Which made me think, this would make a good tip for this series. I looked and we have never covered Edit Original before. So, let me just get everybody on the same page by what I mean by Edit Original. You know that when you go to File, Place in InDesign, you're not actually bringing in the entire file, you're bringing in a proxy, a placeholder for it. So, for example, this image that I placed, if I look in the Links panel, it says, here is the original image. Let me change the width of this column a bit so you can see it. The original image is a PSD file, a Photoshop file, and if I right click on it, I could choose to Edit Original which would open up in it's default program, whichever program is set on this computer to open up PSD files…
