A brief history of lettering in comic books

- So why are most comic books lettered in all upper case? Are all of the characters shouting? And why do we use thousands of dollars of technology to make lettering that looks like it was drawn with an ink pen on an art board? Let's take a look back at the history of comic book lettering and we'll clue you in to some of the terms we'll be using to describe objects and typographical characters in the realm of comics. So what makes a comic book a comic book? Is it words and pictures put together? Yeah, but there's a bit more to it than that. Scott McCloud, a comic creator who thinks about this kind of thing far more than you or I or most anyone else, tackled this question in his book Understanding Comics a few years back, and came up with a definition I think is as good as any. "Comics are sequential art, two or more images in a series, "and the changes that happen between each panel "where the reader uses their imagination "to fill in that gap, a story is told."
