Join Deke McClelland for an in-depth discussion in this video Working with gradients, part of Illustrator CS4 Getting Started.
In this exercise, I'll show you how to work with gradients. Now gradients have…been dramatically enhanced in Illustrator CS4 to the extent that you can create…and modify a gradient directly inside the shape giving you realtime feedback.…I'm working inside of a document called Fearless.ai that's found inside the…Exercise Files folder. I am going to start things off by filling each of the…red stripes with a linear gradient.…So I will select one of the red stripes by clicking on it with my Selection…tool. Then I will go up to the control panel, click on the Select option right…here and choose All. Now I am sure everything that has the same fill and stroke…as this stripe become selected, meaning all the three of stripes. Now I will…fill the stripes using the new Gradient tool. So I will select the Gradient…tool which you can also get by pressing the G key. Then if I click inside a…stripe, notice that I fill it with a gradient. I will click inside this stripe…to fill it and then this stripe to fill it.…

Q: I'm using a pressure brush with a graphics tablet while following along with this course. But when the author clicks and holds in the "Brushes and blobs" movie, he gets an expanding oval, where I get nothing or just a sharp-edged line. My brush doesn't seem to be responding to pressure. What should I do?
A: When you first install a Wacom (or other brand of) tablet, the pressure
options may not at first take hold.
After installing the tablet, try this:
- Confirm that the pressure is working in the Wacom (or other) control
- Quit Illustrator and the other programs.
- Restart your computer.
- Then relaunch Illustrator and try again.
