What are custom brushes?

Custom brushes in Illustrator allow you to create smooth lines and mimic real life paintbrushes, but you can also apply predefined vector artwork to any of the paths that you create. Learning the ins and outs of custom brushes in Illustrator will greatly improve your productivity and help you to create artwork that you never thought possible. Illustrator has five distinct brush types, and each one has many awesome possibilities. These various brushes offer different kinds of behaviors when applied to a path. In order to use the custom brushes, you're going to use the paintbrush tool and you'll draw a path, and you can see that the stroke is applied to the path. If I look in my brush palette, the default brush that I'm using is an example of a calligraphic brush. We'll talk more about the brush types during the duration of this course.
