- With rule number one and the full history of comic lettering in our minds, we're ready to letter the heck out of a comic. But what tools do we need? This section will take you through the software most commonly used to letter comic books professionally as well as some less expensive, or even free options if you're just getting started. In this course, I'll be using Adobe Illustrator, which is what most professionals will use to letter comics since digital production began in the early 1990s. It's also possible to letter in Photoshop or InDesign, but you won't have nearly the control and flexibility over type, as you do in Illustrator. Some alternatives which aren't necessarily industry standard but can do the job are Corel Draw which has most of the same tools, controls and capabilities as Illustrator. Affinity Designer is a newer program with a very Illustrator-like interface, particularly with the text handling and allows you to work in CMYK mode, and it can open and save…
