- All the information we've gathered from discovery and research, is now going to inform us as we move into thumbnail drawing. This is a critical stage of the creative process. You don't want to skip it, you want to do it well to produce your best design. I'm using simple tools; a pencil, a pen, paper, tracing paper, a mechanical pencil and eventually a light pad. This is best showing then explain, so let's dive into it. As you approach thumbnail sketching, as you initially start drawing, I would avoid using a pencil, I would use a pen instead, and the whole purpose of using a pen is it's very unforgiving. It's not going to allow you to edit your idea, you can't erase it, and you don't need to be refining things at this stage.
