Join Deke McClelland for an in-depth discussion in this video Starting a drawing, part of Illustrator CS4 Getting Started.
In this exercise we are going to start drawing. Now we are not going to draw…anything too terribly complicated. We will be using just the Rectangle, Ellipse…and Star tools and yet by the time we are finished, we will have a carefully…crafted piece of artwork. Notice that I am working inside of a new document.…If you would like to achieve the same results as me then you can open the New…Document.ai file from the Exercise Files folder. Now I would like to setup a…regular grid in the background and I am going to do that using something called…the Rectangular Grid tool.…
I will go down to the Line Segment tool, which allows me to draw straight lines.…I will click and hold to bring up the flyout menu and then I will choose…Rectangular Grid tool. Now you can drag with this tool if you want to in order…to draw a grid on the fly. You could also change the number of lines by…pressing the arrow keys. Q: I'm using a pressure brush with a graphics tablet while following along with this course. But when the author clicks and holds in the "Brushes and blobs" movie, he gets an expanding oval, where I get nothing or just a sharp-edged line. My brush doesn't seem to be responding to pressure. What should I do?
A: When you first install a Wacom (or other brand of) tablet, the pressure
options may not at first take hold.
After installing the tablet, try this:
- Confirm that the pressure is working in the Wacom (or other) control
- Quit Illustrator and the other programs.
- Restart your computer.
- Then relaunch Illustrator and try again.
