The Smart Punctuation command
- In this movie, I'll show you how to use the smart punctuation command, which essentially fixes broken text inside of Illustrator. And to get a sense for what I'm talking about, I'll go ahead and scroll down a few lines on this first page. Notice if I zoom in here that we've got a couple of problems. First of all, we have straight quotes, which is a real drag because there's a ton of quotes inside this document. Then notice this fi right there in the word finished. Do you see how it appears as two independent characters whereas what we're supposed to see is the lowercase f curl over and form the dot on the letter i? That's what's known as a ligature. Now what's amazing is that smart quotes are already turned on inside this document. That function resides in a strange place in Illustrator. What you want to do is go up to the control panel and click on the Document Setup button, and then inside the Document Setup dialogue box, you click on the word Type. Then you're going to see this…
