Sci-fi outpost: Build the tower

- [Voiceover] This week we're going to create a nice scene for science fiction. We're going to create this outpost somewhere on some frozen planet and this outpost is going to be a tower and it's going to be shooting a ray out at somebody. Some unseen enemy that's coming to attack. Well, we're going to start by creating the tower itself. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to hit Command R to bring up my rulers and pull out a guide, right here to the middle. Right about here. That's good. Okay, turn off my rulers. Command R and then I'm going to get my pen tool and let's start right up here. This is where I'm going to start to create my tower so I'm going to say click right there and kind of go straight out here. Hold on my Shift key and click right there. Come straight down. I'm going to pull out a handle. A little handle so I can get this little curve right there. Right there like that. Hold down my Shift key to constrain it. Then Option click on it, Shift click out here and bring this out to about like that. Then we'll come in to about here. Let's just say right about there and come down. Come over to this edge and close it off. So that's going to be our tower. Now, in looking at this, I can kind of make a couple of adjustments. I going to want to take these guys down and just bring them down just like that. That's good. That's getting there. Now that I have this, we create a new layer here and I'm going to go in there to my 3D and say New 3D Extrusion from Selected Path. It's going to ask me if I want to go into a workspace, I'm going to say No because there's the tools I need right there. These two panels and you can see one of them opened up right away. So what do we get? We get this shape just like that. Let's undo that. All right so we got that shape. Now I'm here so when I go to the properties. See I'm in the 3D and when I go to the Properties which is this other guy. You notice that I have some presets here and so on. So what I'm going to do is I got the presets. I'm going to go in here and way down at the bottom, see there's a whole list here. I got this guy right there. You can see what it did? It just turned it into a nice big kind of a cylinder. I'm going to bring down the shape here so it's a little narrower, about like that. That's looking good. Make that happen. There we can see that we have this beginnings of our tower and we can kind of move it over to here, right about there. That's look good. Okay, so now, now that we have this tower, we're going to start giving it some look. Okay, we're going to make it look like something. I'm going to just shrink this way down here. So I go over to my 3D panel and I go to the extrusion material right here. The extrusion material and I'm going to click on that. So when I go to properties and see that it's changed. So right up here, Diffuse. That's the body, the shape of it. We're under material, remember? So I'm going to go in here and say give me a New Texture. Click OK. So there's this new texture. It's kind of hard to see what's happening here so right off the bat, I'm going to kind of pull it out so that it's outside and we can kind of see. Now you see how bright it got? Because it's filled with white. So what I'm going to do is right off the bat, I'm going to say Shift Delete to bring up this guy and say Fill with 50 percent gray, click OK and I'll save it and there you can see the gray is now reflected in there. So now I want to give this a little bit of a texture. Now these shapes here, they kind of tell me where I am actually working. Like if I was to take my brush and you can see that I am painting along the bottom down there and I can come around, come over to this side and all around this thing is just working around down there. So now, what's going to happen here is I'm going to go over here to my View and go to Show and turn off the UV Overlay. That got rid of that mesh. That mesh is just telling me where things are inside the shape. So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to give it some filters. So I'm going to go over here to my Filter Gallery and it's got some stuff already in this so let's just dump some of this stuff. Let's throw all these guys away. Okay, I got texture. That's a good one. All right so let's bring up the relief a little bit. We got this nice and the scaling way down so we got this nice little texture happening here. Now a little more breakage to it. So I'm going to give it another filter right on top and this one I'll switch to crackle layer. The crack depth is kind of strong here, the spacing let's bring it down, maybe bring it up a little bit. There, let's bring it way up so it's like really scattered around and we're going to add, put it right behind it that other texture right there and I'm going to say give it another one. Which is going to reflect what we just did and you notice that it's given us more of a pattern, a nice broken up pattern rather than what we were seeing before. I'm still giving it quite a few of these crackle layers on top of each other. So there now that we have this I'm going to click OK and save that and there you can see that we now have this texture happening on our scene there. So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to make it a little smaller. In fact let's view it smaller, okay, and open it up just a little. Okay and I'm going to give it a new layer, a new layer and I'm going to get black. I've got black, I've got a nice hard edge brush. Let's make sure it's a hard edge. Yup, hard edge brush and I'm going to go into my brush engine right here and I'm going to say I got some spacing. There we go. We've got some spacing happening and I got a little size jitter happening. Just enough so I've got a little break up in the line just like that. So now I can do that and you can see right in the back here something happens. So let me undo that. Okay, so now what I'm going to do is I'm going to make my brush a little smaller. I'm going to go in here and let's bring this guy down to about let's say a three and see what that looks like. Let's save that and we don't see it. That's okay 'cause it's just a little, probably a little too thin so let's make it a little thicker, say about seven, nine, let's see what nine is going to do. There that's a big one. That's much too big. So let's bring that down. So now we can see where we are. Let's bring it down to six and we bring it right in here. Oh, we can go way down. Let's go down to two or three. There we go. That's the size we want. So now that we know the size we want, okay we can let's get rid of those and I'll take a pen tool and just draw a straight line straight down like that and in that layer, that we just created, I'm going to take this guy and stroke it right there and path stroke it. Hey, there it is. So now that we see it, I can take that line and let's make sure this guy's take off that auto and I'm going to copy it straight over. Just like that. Let's save that. There we can see where it is. So I'm going to bring it over so there's another one right in between there. Save that. There we go. So now I'm going to take all three of them and copy them over so that we have another set right here, move it over, there we go. Take the whole batch and copy them over. Let's save all that. There we see that we have all those lines going across. So now I can get a little closer here and we'll draw a couple of lines going this way. Let's deselect and we'll just draw this one straight across there. Let's save that and we'll take one and put it right here. Click and click and click and click. So I'm just doing a couple of random ones. Let's save that and you can see that they start to appear so we can just draw a few in different places. Okay now if they're not dark enough, as these aren't, we can always take that layer, duplicate it on itself. Okay and now you can see that it's getting a little darker, just a tad. All right we can even put this one and multiply it and see what it's going to do. See, there it got a little darker and now we can copy it down there we go. So now that we have all this stuff, let's give it some additional kind of markings. So I'm going to create a new layer and here I'm going to go this way and draw a long shape, longer shape like this and fill that with black. Save that and see where that is. Okay, there it is, way up there. So what we're going to do is move it down. Let's move it way down to here and make it smaller. Save that. There it is. Way down there and we can actually cut it in half. So what we'll do is we'll just cut it in half right there. So there we go. Put it right there. Save that. There we go. We've got a couple little windows and we can even move them over. Let's save that, see where they are. There they are. That's a much better place. Now we go look at our mesh to see where things are now but we kind of get a good idea of where they are so what I'm going to do is right here I'm going to draw a big shape like this and fill that with black. Save and see where that appears and let's move it around until we have exactly where we want it. Let's bring it over here. Save it. There it is. Coming into place so we bring it up in here and save. Okay, he wants to be right in between these two guys right there. So now that we know where he's going to go, let's copy it over, copy it over, and save. There we go. So now we've got these little look out areas. Okay, getting there. I'm going to copy one more straight across and then move the whole bunch over just a little bit. Save that. There we go. That's starting to look good. So now in this panel right up above here, we'll give it a little marking. So right here, right in there we're going to throw in a nice red and we'll say save that and there we have this red stripe on top. Now it's got it on top but what we might want to do is cut him out of here and put him into his own layer. Paste, okay let's put him down in here. Right there and what we're going to do is put this guy, have some of those dark tones show through. So I'm going to come over here into its layer styles and say in the underlying layer, don't let those black guys get hidden. Gonna option split this a little bit. Click OK and we'll save that. See what that's going to look like. See? See those little black guys showing through so we go in there and say let's get some of the other tones to come through. Right there like this. And save that. There now we're starting to get these little tones coming through there. Okay, so now there's our basic tower, okay. Now next week what we're going to do is give it the environment and refine it just a little bit more.
