Saving a full-color PNG

I'm still working inside the Save for Web & Devices dialog box, looking at the contents of the fourth artboard in the file called Better type.ai found inside the 12_exporting folder. This time around we are going to compare the original version of the image, the uncompressed version to a 24 bit per pixel PNG graphic. So I'll go ahead and click in the left and preview here and I'm going to switch the Preset to Original. Notice that we have the checkerboard transparency in the background. We also get rid of the dither pattern inside the image, because now we have access to as many as 16.8 million colors. We also have a very smooth drop shadow declining gradually into transparency. Compare that to the drop shadow behind either the GIF or PNG-8 graphic which suddenly disappears. So the drop shadow goes from dark to white and then all of a sudden we have transparency, and that's because you have just one level of transparency with an 8 bit per pixel graphic.
