Join Deke McClelland for an in-depth discussion in this video Rotating, filling, and stacking, part of Illustrator CS6 One-on-One: Fundamentals.
In this movie we're going to copy and flip the feathers, we're going to rotate the arrow…into place, we're going to fill the feathers, and we're going to adjust the stacking order…in the Layers panel just so you know what's coming.…I've saved my progress as Half an arrow.ai, armed with a Black Arrow tool.…I'm going to partially marquee all of these paths that are associated with the feather,…which include this one four point path along the outside and each of the two thinner parts in between.…Now we're going to copy and flip them, and we're going to do these operations from the…keyboard, because they're really common operations that you'll be doing a lot.…
So I'll press Ctrl+C, Command+C on the Mac, that copies the feathers to the clipboard,…then I'll press Ctrl+F, or Command+F on the Mac, that goes ahead and pastes those feathers…in the exact same location, and you could see that we now have two copies.…I'll press Ctrl+Z, or Command+Z on the Mac, to undo that change.…Now click on the word Transform up here in the Control panel.…

Q: I'm following along with Chapter 5 movie, "Creating compound paths." Why can't I get the second shape to compound properly? The Object menu doesn't seem to work.
A: This problem is due to a bug in Illustrator that has developed since this movie was recorded. To work around it, click off the Object menu (or press the Escape key); take another action, such as opening and closing the drawing layer; and revisit the Object menu.
