Rhythm and consistency

- While I've shown you one way to letter a comic book along with a lot of rules to follow, this is really just one approach. It's one that's been proven to work over many years and thousands of comic books, and one that a lot of people are familiar with and will understand without much effort. But if you have an idea for another way to go about something, by all means give it a try. Let's take a look at some examples of lettering that successfully breaks the rules. Let's start with one of my favorite current pen letterers, John Workman. His lettering on Thor, if you're a comic book reader you know it about as well as you know Thor's hammer and his little hat with the funny wings on it. It is an essential part of that comic. Here's some lettering that John Workman has done on Walt Simonson's recent comic Ragnarok. You can see he's still following the same style, where he basically does these very round balloons that merge with the gutters. So the white of the balloon just continues on…
