Now we're going to look at how we can gain more control over topography and icon fonts from the web in multi-device situations. If you have access to exercise files, we're going to be looking at files in the Chapter Two, Video One folder. In the first file, with fixed width layouts, the columns will stay the same no matter how wide or short I make the display. This clips off the headings, this clips off the columns and forces me to use the horizontal scroll bar in order to view all of the content and no one wants to use a horizontal scroll bar when viewing the web. Where this page has a fixed column width of 560 pixels, you want to change that to percentages to make it a fluid grid. In the second webpage, we use percentage based values, like percentages or EMs, to make it more fluid. This gives the layout the ability to adapt to its environment, rather than to potentially clip content that might be of value to the reader. So as I resize down, the columns shrink.
