Multiple strokes

- [Instructor] Let's see how we can create this multiple stroke effect. Currently there's no appearance panel in Illustrator for iPad, as there is in the desktop version which means that to create these effects, the most efficient way of doing it is destructively and that is converting the text to outlines, the text no longer remains editable. That said the end result looks just as good. So let's delete that and recreate it. Now, the reason I am going to convert my type to outlines is because when I do so, I will have the ability to place the stroke around the outside of the letter shape rather than having it be center weighted. I'd also have the option of putting it on the inside, but it's the outside that I'm interested in. So first of all, I'll come to my type panel and outline the text. Then I'll come to my stroke, choose a color. And over on my properties panel, I will increase the weight of that stroke. You'll see that the stroke starts off being center weighted, that's this option on the left here of the three. I'm going to now change that to make it aligned to the outside and anticipating where I'm going to go next, I'm going to make this stroke heavier than I actually wanted to be because my next move is to duplicate this letter. Now on the copy that is on top, I'm going to change the stroke color to the same color as the background in this case, white. And then I'll just need to reduce the weight of that stroke. So if I use 22 points for the outside, I'm going to come to about half of that amount. And there we see a multiple stroke effect. As a precaution, it's a good idea to select both of those shapes and group them together so that now they move as one item.
