Join William Everhart for an in-depth discussion in this video Key considerations for all maps, part of Creating a Map with Illustrator.
When it comes to creating maps, there are some things that will…make your map easier to use, and make the creation process more productive.…Here are some key considerations you should keep…in mind before you start illustrating your map.…First, illustrate at a larger size than the final required piece.…It is just a simple fact that things are much more easily…traced or drawn at a larger scale then reduced to fit your needs.…Local roads…with their tendency to twist and turn in short…succession are most certainly easier to trace when they're larger.…
As you're creating details for things like landmarks and…more complex road styles, keep in mind that you…will also be reducing the size of these details…once you scale your map down to its final size.…Small details can get lost when scaled down,…and too much detailing can turn into an indistinguisable…blob when reduced.…My suggestion would be to occasionally scale your drawings…down to the final size while you're creating them.…This will help you decide if you need to change…
