- Textures are a wonderful side effect of the second law of thermodynamics, commonly known as the law of increased entropy. Entropy is the process of going from order to disorder or chaos. When applied to objects, everything ages, decays, wears out, and becomes worn. Anything with a surface moves from new and shiny to old and rusty over time. Textures are nature's way of reminding us who's in control and it also provides us with a really authentic design asset as well. Not all textures are created by exposure to natural elements. Some are formed by repeated use or just neglect. This is a scrap t-shirt. I had a local screen printer print a block of white ink on. I then asked my wife to wash it with every load of clothes for about a year. What I ended up with is this really cool, crackled, worn texture I can now use as a design device.
