- Usually when you look at the surface of a painting, it's imperfect, so I'm just going to show you a simple way to create an imperfect surface texture. We're going to use a toothbrush to create this texture, and you can see I've put a surgical glove on my right hand, otherwise, the process does get messy, and this prevents you from getting paint under your fingernails. That's why I'm doing it. This process is really simple. You might have already done this before, but we're just going to take this toothbrush, load some water into it. We already have pigment from when we painted our brushes, and we're just going to pick up enough of the pigment to darken the brush and load it, and then, the way you can apply it, there's a bunch of different ways. Once again, this can get messy, so make sure you're in an area that it's OK to get splatter outside of the creative zone, because the first time I did this, I got paint on my wife's car and she wasn't happy.
