- The next thing we need to do is set some general preferences inside of Illustrator that are geared towards drawing our icons. Most important of these is going ahead and setting up our grids. Now you can go back and change these preferences anytime you want to, but it's best to go ahead and do them before you start working on your project so that everything is set up correctly. So to find my preferences I'm just going to go up to the menu here and go to Illustrator and choose Preferences and if you're on a Windows machine you're going to go to Edit Preferences. You can also do the keyboard shortcut cmd or ctrl + K which will bring up the same dialogue box. So the first thing I'm looking at is my General Preferences and I like to change my keyboard increment. The first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to set this instead of at 1. to .1. That allows me to nudge elements in 1/10th of an increment of whatever unit I have of measurement and currently it's points which we need to change.…
