Creating signage
- Sometimes the artist will draw little type elements, like road signs, store signs, and newspaper headlines. Sometimes they'll leave them for you, the letterer. There's no official rule, so it's good to be prepared for any situation. Here's some tips for using fonts and distortion techniques to get signage to merge with the artwork, as if it was drawn there from the start. So we're back to this page of Astro City we were lettering before with the electric balloon, and we can see on this TV screen where the newsman is talking. There's a little white bar in both panels with a little letter "A" on it. Let's see what the writer's asking for. We can see here in panels three and four, letter A is asking for two graphics: "Is Winged Victory A Fraud," and "Closed Down by Federal Auth." So let's highlight the first one. Copy. Back in Illustrator, go to the Lettering layer. Let's zoom in, here. Get the Text tool, and we'll just click and paste. We can see in this case, actually, your computer…
