Creating a preview window
- One of the trickier aspects of designing icons is that they're typically designed to be seen at a smaller size. But when we're drawing in Illustrator, we're typically zoomed up, so that we can focus on the details of what we're working on. That means that you have to spend a lot of time zooming back out and then zooming back in, because what you think might be effective really close up, when you zoom back out to the way it's supposed to be viewed, it doesn't always look the same or as effective as you'd think. So, one of the easiest ways to deal with that in Illustrator, is to create what I call a preview window. That means another copy of the exact same window that you have opened up, but zoomed to the size that your final icons are going to be viewed at. That allows you to work up close, while still seeing what the overall affect to your icon is going to be.
