Join Deke McClelland for an in-depth discussion in this video Combining paths, part of Illustrator CS4 Getting Started.
In this exercise, I am going to show you how to combine simple shapes to create…more complex ones. I am working inside of a document called CA Surf Sign.ai…found inside the Exercise Files folder. We are going to take these ellipses…plus a few other shapes and combine them together to create this modified…highway sign that we see in the background.…Now I have set this document up, so that I have a Template layer that we can…trace as we are building our document. I also have a Drawing layer that I am…working on. So if you are working along with me, make sure to click on that…Drawing layer.…
Now I will hide the Layers palette and I want to combine these two shapes…together by taking the ellipse and subtracting it from the larger circle and…because both the ellipse and the circle trace contours of the object that we…want to make, we are in pretty good shape. I don't have to sit there…meticulously build this sign using say, the more complex Pen tool.…So I am going to click on this ellipse to select it and then I am going to…

Q: I'm using a pressure brush with a graphics tablet while following along with this course. But when the author clicks and holds in the "Brushes and blobs" movie, he gets an expanding oval, where I get nothing or just a sharp-edged line. My brush doesn't seem to be responding to pressure. What should I do?
A: When you first install a Wacom (or other brand of) tablet, the pressure
options may not at first take hold.
After installing the tablet, try this:
- Confirm that the pressure is working in the Wacom (or other) control
- Quit Illustrator and the other programs.
- Restart your computer.
- Then relaunch Illustrator and try again.
