Okay. It's time for our first challenge to apply what we've learned about the park principles so far. So, in this challenge, what I want you to do is take this business card up here at the top, and I want you to reconfigure this business card to look a little bit better layout-wise, and I also want you to write down some notes about how you'd change it to make it a little bit more consistent with the Houston Aeronautics brand. Using what you've learned so far about colors and consistency, and rearranging and aligning stuff, this should be a really easy exercise for you to practice that, and put it all into place.
So, you can do this one of two ways. If you have access to Adobe Illustrator, you can just open up the park challenge.ai file which is in your chapter one exercise files folder, and you can open it up, and you can just rearrange them down here in this blank space. If you don't have Adobe Illustrator, that's okay. There's also a PDF inside of the exercise files that you can print out on your own. And then what I would suggest doing is just taking this first card, cutting it out, each individual piece that you see, and then just rearranging them on the blank side down here.
When you come back and watch the solutions video, I'll show you exactly what I did to the card along with some of my notes about how I would change the colors, and all that good stuff. This should take you about two to three minutes. So come on back when you're finished and check out the solution.

4/17/2014Justin breaks graphic design into an easy-to-follow acronym, PARC, or proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast, and shows how to apply these principles to everyday design challenges. He also shows how to use the two major tools in a designer's arsenal, typography and color, to grab attention and set the appropriate mood for your documents. Then you'll work together on four different design projects that you might encounter in any office: a business card, an envelope, a flyer, and even a presentation.
- Applying the PARC system to design projects
- Selecting and setting type
- Creating a color theme
- Adding images and illustrations
- Preparing projects to be professionally printed
- Designing a slideshow, business card, or flyer
