- In my 20 plus years as a professional comic book letterer and designer, there's one question I've been asked more than any other. So, of course, I saved it for last. How do I become a professional in the comic industry? First I'll tell you the qualities I think are necessary for being a pro letterer. And then, I'll give you suggestions for getting your foot in the door, or even smashing it down Hulk-style. Since most comic books are published monthly, comic creators are almost constantly on deadline. And since the letterer is at the end of the assembly line process, each day that the writer, artist, and colorist are late is one less day that we have to do our job. As a result, lettering jobs are nearly always in a rush. Here's a handy guide to staying sane and succeeding as a letterer. This might be obvious, but turning in quality work, on time, to the requested specifications. If they ask for a 300 dpi pdf lettered at artwork size, give them exactly that. You'll save yourself time…
