Basic compositing in InDesign

- Since most comic book artists colored in Photoshop and lettered in Illustrator, the two needed to be combined in order to make files that can be sent to the printer. This is often a job that you can offer to take on, for an additional charge, of course. So we'll show you the basics of compositing in InDesign, the most common and flexible method, as well as Photoshop, which will work in a pinch. I've opened up InDesign, and we're going to create a new document to merge our artwork and our lettering files. Go to File, New, Document, and we're going to set this page size to our magical comic book page size number, 6.625 x 10.187. Then we're going to go down here to Bleed and Slug. Sometimes this isn't showing, so you have got to click the little arrow to make it show, and then in Bleed, in any of those boxes, just type .125, one-eighth inch of bleed, and it will automatically fill in the rest there, if you have got the little lock locked.
