9-slice scaling explained
As we've been creating symbols throughout this chapter, you've seen an option appear in the symbols dialog box labeled Enable Guides for 9slice Scaling. But we really haven't gone into it, and seen what it is or what it does. So, what is it? Well, the short answer is that 9slice scaling is a better way to scale objects inside of Illustrator. The origins of non-slice scaling come from the Adobe flash player, and it basically allows you to quote-unquote, program a movie clip or graphic to scale in a certain way. For a long time, this wasn't applicable to any workflows other than those that took artwork from Illustrator into Flash Professional. However, now Illustrator actually incorporates the effects of 9slice scaling on artwork, thus making it easier for you to scale things, like rounded rectangles. Let's take a look at how this works.
