Value stream terminology

- [Instructor] A value stream includes actions to process information from the consumer and actions to transform the product or service on its way to the consumer. Note that actions taken in a value stream may or may not add value to the product or service. Let's have a look at this now. As you see here, value adding activities are those that stakeholders, primarily consumers, judge as being of value. A simple test for value added activities is to ask if the consumer would judge a product or service less valuable if the activity could be left out without affecting the product. Non-value adding activities add cost but no value to the product or service from the consumer's perspective. A key goal of lean is to eliminate unnecessary non-value adding activities. Some non-value adding activities are necessary. For example, eliminating activities to fulfill legal and regulatory requirements might put the provider at risk.
