- [Instructor] History is a teacher, as long as we are willing to learn. At the beginning of our time here, let's take a moment to look back at the arrival of cellular technology and begin at the beginning with first-generation or 1G cellular networks. Starting in 1979, the first wireless network arose delivering analog voice. At commercial launch, 1G was the bleeding edge of emerging technology. Though many companies were able to capture some value, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, or NTT, became the most valuable player delivering three 1G standards and building the first nationwide cellular network across Japan. In 1983, 1G was commercially released in the US by Ameritech featuring the Motorla DynaTAC. This was a moment for first movers.
