- The contingent-worker model and the gig economy are becoming more prevalent. The days of a bunch of people working together in an office are slowly giving way to meetings being held via Google Hangouts with one person in a Starbucks and the other on a train headed somewhere. As I mentioned earlier, MIT professor Tom Malone theorizes that companies will devolve over the next decades into core teams at the top but most business activities will be conducted using a network, similar to the resourcing models and processes that are used today to make movies. As a result, the idea of hiring and working will take on a whole new meaning and dimension. Teams are going to form and disband. They're going to focus on a project. Once that project is completed, they'll go on to the next engagement.
