- [Instructor] In our last video, we saw how we could take an IP address, like 10.1.2.3, along with its subnet mask information, like /8, and from that, extract the network address. On what subnet or what network does this IP address reside? Well, another piece of information that we want to glean from this IP address subnet combination is what's called the directed broadcast address. Remember when we were talking earlier in this course about broadcasts? We said that a broadcast will send at one time, and it was destined for everyone on a subnet, everyone on a specific network. Well, let's say that I wanted to send a broadcast out to everybody on the 10.0.0.0/8 network. What IP address would I use to do that to get to everybody on that network? That's the directed broadcast address. And it's really easy to calculate, and we'll want to calculate it for one reason is, we don't want to take that address and assign it to a host.
