- [Instructor] The problem of how to record information for future reference isn't new. In fact, it's one of the oldest human problems and some of the earliest examples of written language were made to do just that. They include records of shipping manifests and trade agreements. There are receipts for bushels of grain and barrels of wine. Fast forward a few thousand years and businesses all over the world are still doing much the same, albeit with tools that are a little bit more modern than a clay tablet. One of the simplest ways that we can store data is in a list. In computer science terms, you might call this a one-dimensional array. Let's suppose that we have several picture files that we want to organize from a recent vacation. I put them all into a single folder on my computer. Here I have an alphabetized list of the images.
