- Technology innovations have been both destroying and creating business models since at least the mid 15th century. When a German guy named Gutenberg reconfigured a grape crushing machine to create a printing press with moveable type. That innovation put a lot of monks out of work. They'd been creating illustrated manuscripts by hand by the light of candles. In 1589, Queen Elizabeth I stated, "I refuse to issue a patent on a mechanized knitting machine for fear it would put my poor subjects out of work." This is one of my favorite quotes about the impact of technology on work. So even back in 1589 there was apprehension about emerging technologies transforming the workplace and taking jobs away from workers of the day. Mechanized looms led to the emergence of a group called the Luddites in around 1811.
