- [Instructor] Youth sports. Studies say that participation in youth sports is associated with better grades, higher degrees, higher incomes, and improved physical health and mental health. Yet in the U.S., there's a decline in sport participation. From 2011 to 2017, there was a 5.5% decline in participation. In 2011, 41.5% of kids played sports but by 2017, that number fell to 37%. Why? Some blame television and computers. Some say that the win at all costs mentality and aggressive coaching drives kids and their parents away but still another reason for the decline in youth sports may be money. In 2018, the Aspen Institute published a study that said that the annual cost for one child to play a single sport is about $700, $700 per sport per child. It's no wonder that while 69% of kids from families with $100,000 per year incomes play sports, only 34% of kids from poor families that make less than $25,000 per year play…
