- [Instructor] While we can operate a wireless network that's open to everyone, that's not usually something we want to do. To protect our information and ourselves, we need to secure the network. This is done by turning on security features that let us control who can access our network, and which use encryption to protect information being transmitted wirelessly. The oldest of these, WEP, short for wired equivalent privacy, is an outdated security mechanism that shouldn't be used anymore. It's easy to crack, and therefore, basically ineffective. It provided the ability to set a key, a string of hexadecimal characters that people who wanted to join the network would need to know and type in, in order to associate their device with the network.
