The importance of perspective
- [Instructor] When you conduct any type of network reconnaissance, it's extremely important to understand the perspective that you have on a network. Networks emply a wide variety of security controls that are designed to limit access. Firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, routers, switches, and other network devices all restrict the access that other devices have to the resources on the network. These controls can also limit the accuracy of a network scan. For example, consider the simple network shown here. The firewall separates this network into three segments: the internet, an internal network, and a DMZ. The DMZ contains among other things a web server. The host firewall in this web sever exposes four ports: port 80 for unencrypted web traffic, port 443 for encrypted web traffic, port 1521 for a database running on the server, and port 3389 for remote desktop administration using the RDP protocol.
