What's the reality of bringing back jobs?

“

(upbeat music) - [Interviewer] What a politician runs for for office and says, "I'm going to bring manufacturing jobs in by 2020," you got to take that with a dose of skepticism, right? Because yeah, sure, jobs, but for whom? - Yeah. Well, when they say that, it's an easy tagline. And it's a call to hark back to an era that isn't going to come back. But what is true is that there can be a different style of manufacturing. There can be increased precision of machining and manufacturing, but it's not going to be the era of the past. It's the same thing as just saying, "Hey, we're going to bring coal back." No, we're not. And the states don't want it either. (chuckles) Pennsylvania is not coal country anymore. It's actually a healthcare country. The biggest employer in the state, (laughs) it's the hospital system which provides phenomenal care. People fly in from all over to get taken care of by that healthcare system. So the shift that we have to get ready for is how do we create the next wave? What I would hope that the current administration is thinking about is saying let's bring manufacturing back. Great, how do we empower the next era of genetic tailored treatments or genomic medicine? That's a different form of manufacturing. We can have a corridor of next generation pharmaceutical companies, people who do genomic sequencing to help find diseases. All of that is possible, but we don't have to just go to an era that technology is moving or it's leapfrogging us forward on. (upbeat music)
