What you should know

- [Instructor] Outsourcing is a complex undertaking with a high risk of failure. Even the biggest and most experienced organizations have had to cancel outsourcing contracts or never even made it off the starting line. To succeed with outsourcing, you need to use both management and leadership skills. You'll need to make project plans with major milestones and cost estimates. And you'll need to help people navigate their way through the gray zone of uncertainty as their work changes and they need to develop and use new skills. It also helps to have a thorough understanding of the tasks that you think you want to outsource. There's no need to take all that onto your own shoulders, though. I encourage you to get help from your executive sponsor, human resources department, and a lawyer or contracts manager.
