What are the current issues with data collection?

(bright pulsing instrumental music) - Well the first portion is actually that people have been talking about this for quite a while it's becoming increasingly prevalent because more and more people's data's being stolen. The reasoning behind that is one, you have groups that are just getting more sophisticated and two, well companies are not investing in to the level that they need to, particularly hospital systems or others. The portion of this where this gets deeply troubling is, and we oftentimes just look to the classic, you know consumer internet companies and I don't want to give them a pass here. I'm using that to say there's a whole nother pocket where people's medical records are being sold by hospitals. You have all this data that is moving around in this almost behind the scenes manner and that's from these what are called data brokers and they shuffle the data from one vendor to another and they're being aggregated and you don't even know what's out there about you. And people are creating dossiers about you and your family and all your likes if you will and what are the implications of that. People say, oh it's just for marketing, but how do you know how it's being used? How do you have the ability once your data is stolen to know or protect about that? But there's another one which is they're, which I do get very concerned about is we set the expectation that through technology you don't have a recourse, that's just the way it is. If you're go in to a service and they say sorry you know you're denied, then it's just an algorithm or it's a technology this thing that's behind it and we have example after example of this. This is happening right now, there's been case after case where people have seen and taken a look at things like well if you're black and you apply for a loan how is that different than if you're white and you apply for a loan? Where about if, what zip code you live in, and you can just play with some of these online applications and you'll see the disparity. (bright pulsing instrumental music)
