What is an MSSP?

- [Instructor] Let's look more closely at the Managed Security Service Provider. The modern MSSP comes from the Internet Service Providers of the 1990s. It all began when ISPs would sell their customers a hardware-based firewall. It was installed in their customer's building, and because very few people knew how to do it, for an additional recurring fee, the ISP would remotely manage the firewall. From that point, the MSSP business expanded, to include a wide variety of managed security services, such as intrusion detection systems, incident response, and vulnerability assessments. Industry research firm Forester recently identified the most significant MSSPs in the global market in 2018. The list includes these well-known names. But no matter how good the MSSP is, the customer still has the ultimate responsibility for its own security. And the relationship between the MSSP and the customer is not a simple turn key one. Customers must be prepared to manage and monitor the MSSP and hold it accountable to deliver the services for which it's contracted.
