Using data science for good
- So, yeah, one of the coolest things about data science is that it's really powerful, and today we have an opportunity to really use data science for good. So for example, in my role at Patagonia, I'm on the product responsibility team, and what I focus on is identifying and quantifying the environmental impacts of everything that we do to produce our product. And data science has a really key role in shedding light on the carbon emissions or the water usage, or toxicity of what we do, and without it, we would be kind of flying blind. So there's a data problem. Data coming from various sources, and we need to be able to understand and merge those data streams into our business so we can quantify at a very granular level, everything that we're doing and how we're improving the environment.
