- [Narrator] When you're using a network you don't trust, one option to help secure your data transfer, is to use a VPN. A VPN, or a Virtual Private Network, creates a secure, encrypted connection through your local network and the internet from your device to a server on another network. Traffic and information passing through this tunnel is protected from people on your network, and the networks between you and that server. Your activity then comes from that server, when you visit sites or send information across the internet. In many cases, web traffic is already protected by TLS, or https. But not all of the information coming from your computer is web traffic. Apps like chat programs, mail clients, file syncing programs, and others, often use different different technologies or protocols to communicate.
