- Like any project, if you decide to take on University teaching on the side you'll want to make sure that you set aside enough time to do an excellent job. And then double it. Why? First it isn't going to be career enhancing if you just do an okay job. You should be producing excellent material and spending a lot of time interacting with students. Second you aren't fully leveraging the opportunity for career enhancement unless you are making yourself available to the University Administration to help influence the program in a positive way. I consider it an implied requirement to help advise on curriculum issues and join advisory boards. If you can't make this commitment I'm not sure that teaching is a good idea. So how does all of this help? The best of your instructor colleagues will also be on these committees. They are potential opportunities for writing books and sharing conference presentations.
