- I've been independent most of my career, so I'm largely in charge of my own schedule, but I've known a lot of colleagues over the years that spend a lot of time in front of audiences, even when they are full-time. You absolutely can do it. First, and this might be obvious, if you are representing your company at a conference, that should be a win for you and for your boss. So, if you ask your boss to go to a conference, and you are initially turned down, ask if you would be allowed to go if you were picked up as a speaker. This might very well tip the scales. There's one caution about this. Some companies love it when you brag about what a great data scientist you are, but some really don't love it. Some models are either highly proprietary or they might be very sensitive in nature. Please ask about this and make certain that your topic is neither of these.
