- Side hustle, for free? I think there's a lot of rewarding side hustle that doesn't pay on the spot. That's more of a long-term play. And speaking at certain conferences is a great example of this. A lot of smaller conferences, and even some big ones, don't have paid speakers. So why would you want to be one of those speakers? Unless you're a famous speaker, just one consulting gig is probably more valuable than a speaker's fees so getting an audience is truly more about the long-term play that it is about the short-term one. Speaking is generally more about business development than speaking fees, at least when you're starting out. If you have existing prepared material, registration is going to be waived and transportation is covered, I think it's pretty hard to turn these opportunities down.
