Security considerations for general business

- [Instructor] In general, businesses are rapidly adopting cloud as the most cost-effective path towards deploying their information technology. Outsourcing IT is a highly attractive strategy with nearly 40% of startups outsourcing to the cloud. Outsourcing to the international market makes information security an even greater concern. Education is one of the most active outsourcing industries. Due to the nature of the content they keep and their varying locations, schools, universities, colleges, and other educational institutions are frequent victims of data breach. With the research data, student and alumni personal records, health center records, payment information for tuition, housing, food, and books, the data security needs of the education market are broad and widespread. Many government, industry, and state regulations mandate security requirements for every type of information stored by these institutions. Companies in the energy sector are also adopting cloud. They are highly attractive targets for cyberattacks, with the United States Department of Homeland Security reporting that 41% of these organizations have reported malware attacks. Although the overall number of incidents reported was relatively small, the proportion aimed at energy was not. 41% of all US Cyber Emergency Response Team incidents in 2012 were against energy sector companies. The sector receiving the next highest number of threats, internet-facing industrial systems, experienced only 11% of these incidents. Energy companies are subjected to the broadest range of attacks.
