- [Narrator] Almost everyone has wi-fi at home these days and it really makes using devices like laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart home devices, and media streaming boxes useful. In a home setting, wi-fi networks are usually provided by a wireless base station, often part of a router that connects to your cable or DSL modem. These devices offer a web-based interface to control the settings for your wi-fi. To access it, you go to the IP address of the router in your web browser, and once you log in, there are a few settings you should make sure to check to keep your wi-fi secure. The first thing to look at is the name of your wi-fi network. It's a good idea to not use private or personal information there, like your address, your name, or other identifiable information. A wi-fi network is broadcast up to a hundred feet or so, and the name of a network is pretty easy for anyone within their range to see.
